102 Dalmatians – PC Game

102 Dalmatians - PC

102 Dalmatians, the sequel to the live-action adaptation of the Disney animated classic, has made its debut on the Sega Dreamcast. As is the case with most Disney films these days, a console adaptation of the film is almost a given and is generally set into motion with tried-and-true gameplay. To some, the genre is known as a “Disney Platformer” – but to the casual gamer, it means easily accessible and fun gameplay. In short, something for the whole family to enjoy, much on the same level as Disney films.
The game itself follows the films’ storyline to a tee. You play the role of two of the Dalmatians, Oddball or Domino, who are out on the town looking for treasure. It’s not long before you realize that a toy you find buried in a park was made at one of Cruella De Vil’s toy factories; the fact the her toys are being buried rather than being played with is making Cruella very upset. Facing financial ruin from lack of sales, Cruella sets an evil plan in motion – to reprogram her toys to capture any Dalmatian puppies in sight. Soon enough, Domino and Oddball are out on their biggest adventure yet – to save their brothers and sisters.
With regard to gameplay – you can expect to run around vast, interactive levels, as you attempt to obtain items and rescue your brethren. As is the case with most Disney games, the bulk of older users will hardly find the game challenging. A younger audience is sure to have plenty of fun with the game. The goal of each level is to obtain 100 bones, rescue all the puppies you can find, and either destroy or trap anything that Cruella places in your way. As an added bonus to finishing levels one hundred percent complete, you are rewarded with new minigames, such as minigolf and a traditional labyrinth, which are played separately from the main quest. For completing certain tasks, the game also rewards you with stickers that you can view at a later time. Collecting every sticker will unlock a hidden animated sequence.
While the game certainly offers more than enough to keep children interested, several glaring flaws may detract seasoned gamers. Perhaps the most annoying is the lack of a true 3D camera within the game. You can manually change your view to pan left and right, however, it is impossible to look either up or down. In some multitiered levels, you are unable to see below your character, and you are forced to jump blindly. Graphically, the game looks good in polygonal 3D, and the engine runs much more smoothly than the PlayStation version of the same game. In fact, almost no pop up or slow down is noticeable.
Overall, this latest addition to the Disney family of games is good for kids and presents a longquest with plenty of secrets to unlock. Younger children will be delighted to be at the controls, but seasoned gamers will want to look elsewhere for a more polished and challenging experience.

Alien VS Predator – PC Game

Alien VS Predator - PC
If you’re a typical game player, you already know the story and concept behind Aliens versus Predator. You’ve seen the movies, read the comic books, played with the toys, and maybe even helped Jesse Ventura become governor of Minnesota. In 1994, Rebellion software created what is generally considered to be one of the ill-fated Atari Jaguar’s best games and the definitive use of the license to date, Alien versus Predator. Five years later, the companyhas remade the game for the PC, bringing half a decade of technology and gameplay advancements to bear on its previous effort, and the result is excellent.
On the surface, Aliens versus Predator is a 3D action shooter of the old (pre-Half Life) school: Armed with a variety of weapons you doggedly, repeatedly move from point A to point B, killing anything in your way, riding on elevators, and flipping lots of switches. Where the gamedeviates from the norm, and succeeds beyond expectations, is in its rendering of three distinct viewpoints and its effective re-creation of the film series’ unrelieved sense of dread.
Each of the game’s three characters – the titular Predator and Alien, and the hapless human Marine – has his own plot, composed of six levels (five in the case of the Alien). The story portion of these campaigns, though, is virtually missing; the levels have little continuity between them, except for a vague sense that you are traveling from one connected place to another, and equipment acquired on one level does not carry over to the next. Luckily, a lack of coherent plot is not as much of a liability for Aliens versus Predator as it would be for almost any other game, because the history and motivation of each main character are understood implicitly, as they are simply part of the pop-culture landscape. The entire game is essentially a series of set pieces designed to evoke a mood of anxiety and lurking terror. And this Aliens versus Predator does very, very well. Emerging from a cramped hallway into total darkness, scattering a few flares around to discover that you’ve entered a five-story hangar containing a huge alien ship, then hearing your motion detector scream to life as something starts to move in the pitch blackness is an experience in horror unrivaled in gaming.
The engine that brings this all to life is not exactly state of the art, but is close enough to more than adequately render the game’s environments. The developers have wisely chosen to focus their attention on effective lighting: Fluorescents crackle to life in response to your entering a room, flashing red lights accompany warning klaxons, and hissing flares bathe dark areas in an eerie white glow. The corona effects made popular by Unreal are here in abundance, and if strobing, colored lights are sometimes overused, they remain true to the Alien films, which share a similar fascination with mood-heightening, seizure-inducing lighting schemes. The levels take place, for the most part, in assorted military installations, with occasional forays into alien hives and the familiar tall canyons that pass for outdoor scenery in most shooters. More often than not, though, the locations are interesting and filled with enough architectural surprises, bric-a-brac from the various films, and cool extras (like glimpsing spaceships rumbling past windows), to ensure that the environments remain exciting. The game is especially successful when rendering derelict Alien spacecraft. The recreation of H.R. Giger’s sleek design is almost flawless, from the enormous, curved hulls to the overtly erotic entryways.

Blades of Time – XBOX 360

Blades of Time - XBOX 360

The fight was going poorly for Ayumi. Down to her last shred of life against a foe three times her size, she had just one chance to come out alive. So she fell back on her old standby: time manipulation. In a red flash, one Ayumi became three, and her once-living foe entered the realm of the dead.
There are situations in Blades of Time when Ayumi’s mystical powers come together in such spectacular ways that you can hardly contain your excitement. Figuring out clever ways to lay waste to demons triggers “eureka!” moments, and that feeling resurfaces in a variety of clever puzzles. Blades of Time offers such a novel spin on traditional third-person combat that you might be able to overlook the unresponsive controls and the jarring gun combat for a little while. But no matter how enthralled you become, it won’t take long for the harsh light of reality to illuminate the many pitfalls. Blades of Time is a great concept in an uneven package.
Like all women who don skimpy clothes and know a stunning array of martial arts techniques, Ayumi is a treasure hunter. Her multidimensional tale contains so many opposing factions that keeping everything straight is as difficult as the slaying formidable foes who try to kill you, and her annoying narration only further distances you from her plight. When the perfunctory ending sequence plays out in less than a minute, you wonder why you should even care about the outcome at all.

Final Fantasy 2 – XBOX 360

Final Fantasy 2 - XBOX 360

Final Fantasy XIII-2′s box art features the indomitable Lightning, looking strong and feminine in her tough-as-nails armor and flowing skirt of feathers. You remember Lightning, of course: she spent the majority of Final Fantasy XIII trying to release her sister Serah from a crystalline prison. Don’t let that gorgeous portrait of the daunting heroine fool you, however. She has a part to play in this direct sequel, but it’s Serah’s turn in the spotlight now. Serah’s not the powerhouse personality her sister is, but that doesn’t keep Final Fantasy XIII-2 from delivering a satisfying mix of poignant storytelling and exciting action.
That isn’t to say Final Fantasy XIII-2 is as epic an adventure as you may have expected. The story isn’t long as far as Japanese role-playing games go–maybe 25 hours for a standard playthrough. There are reasons to linger or return if you’re the completionist type, but the length is a consideration for series fans hoping for a Final Fantasy-sized adventure. If those 25 hours were jam-packed with challenging action and dramatic cutscenes, perhaps you wouldn’t notice the story’s brevity. Alas, a lengthy fetch quest makes the game drag considerably, as does a protracted platforming sequence that causes the pace to chug as you near the conclusion, right when you’d expect the tempo to take off. The cinematics and battles both burst with occasional thrills, but it’s as if developer Square Enix decided that unnecessary padding was the proper solution to the problem of Final Fantasy XIII’s overly linear progression.

Prototype 2 – XBOX 360

Prototype 2 - XBOX 360

Destruction is at your fingertips in Prototype 2, and you don’t have to work hard to conjure unbelievable chaos. Through streamlined controls, nonexistent difficulty, and a bevy of impressive-looking attacks, Prototype 2 transports you to a consequence-free world in which you can happily cleave soldiers and smash helicopters to your heart’s content. This relentless accessibility is Prototype 2′s biggest strength and weakness. With nary a moment of genuine challenge to be found, you sprint from one entertaining event to another, laughing at the delightful absurdity of it all. But without any barriers to overcome, there’s little sense of accomplishment. Prototype 2 isn’t the slightest bit novel, but it’s so utterly ridiculous that it’s hard to wipe that mischievous smile from your face.
In contrast to the devil-may-care attitude showcased in the majority of the adventure, the story does take itself seriously. A military force has quarantined a major metropolis under the guise of protecting citizens from a viral outbreak, but their occupancy is far from altruistic. In reality, they are conducting bioweapon research, and the people are just unlucky cattle being led to slaughter. It’s a morbid situation that makes it satisfying to kill your opposition–defense contractor Blackwatch–as you hunt down the higher-ups who ordered this atrocity.
The initial rush you feel when the central plot comes into focus dissipates as you learn more about the conspiracy. Evil stereotypes permeate the cast of characters, but even though there’s proper motivation to murder them all, you rarely feel as if you understand whom you’re tracking down. Scenes of redemption toward the end of the story breathe life into some of these individuals, but by that point you won’t even care what happens to the villains. While character development is lacking, the storytelling is interesting. Most of the dirty details surface when you consume certain people, and the flashes of memory piece together a terrifying puzzle about the inner machinations of power-obsessed heretics who rarely question their horrific actions.

Warhammer 40K Space Marine – XBOX 360 Game

Warhammer 40K Space Marine - XBOX 360

If you’re a Warhammer 40K fan, you’ve dreamed of taking up a chainsword and carving Orks into bloody chunks of flesh and bone. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine plants you in the heavy boots of an Ultramarine and lets you do just that. The viscera fly in this third-person shooter/melee hybrid. They stain the ground and splash against your screen, yet the brainless hordes continue their assault, crying out their familiar “waaagh!” before presenting themselves for slaughter. Space Marine is simple fun, and a treat for fans of the franchise–and for anyone who delights in the ceaseless bloodletting of bad guys. It is, in fact, a little too simple. As entertaining as it is, the game lacks the variety, the memorable moments, and the sense of scale of the finest shooters. After you annihilate yet another great mess of greenskins, the question arises: Is this all there is to it? With some exceptions, yes, that’s all there is to it, and it’s hard not to wonder what might have, should have been. But the action is so satisfying, and the atmosphere so grim, that you’ll want to see the adventure through.
What Space Marine does best is capture the spirit of its universe. The Ultramarines’ weathered armor is so heavy and hardy, they don’t so much wear it as it wears them. As you push through battle-worn trenches, the Orks’ makeshift machinery erupts from the ground, shaking the earth. Roaring greenskins in rocket packs rush past, providing a touch of comedy amid all the carnage. And such carnage it is. Enemies erupt in soggy displays of goo, yet the waves continue, your foes’ bloodthirst overcoming their sense of self-preservation. When you carve your chainsword through these forces, the buzz is so authentic that you can almost feel the green flesh being torn away from your foes’ skeletons. The visuals and sound both work hard to promote this brutal atmosphere.

Bioshock 2 – XBOX 360 Game

Bioshock 2 - XBOX 360

When the city of Rapture was first unveiled, it was an underwater dystopia ravaged by civil war and self-destructive genetic manipulation. This strange and unforgettable world was also one of awe and wonder. Set nearly a decade after the events of its precursor, BioShock 2′s Rapture is just as haunting and atmospheric the second time around (and perhaps even more so), but the sunken tomb of Rapture has lost much of the mystery that made it so memorable. Everything seems a bit too familiar, and the story that accompanies your journey is not as impressive or shocking as the original. Despite this, BioShock 2 plays host to several enhancements over the first, including an expanded set of moral dilemmas, improved shooter mechanics, and a surprisingly fun and engaging multiplayer mode. Whether or not you’ve experienced Rapture before, BioShock 2 is an all at once beautiful, disturbing, and thought-provoking experience that stays with you after you’ve shut it off.
“Fallen, fallen is Babylon.” Scrawled across the wall above a board covered with photographs, these words greet you in the waterlogged, decaying opulence of Adonis Spa after you awaken. Ten years have passed since the surprising events of BioShock 2′s opening cinematic, and you’re a man with a mission: to find your Little Sister. As Subject Delta, one of the original Big Daddy protectors first introduced in BioShock, you were pair-bonded with a Little Sister named Eleanor Lamb through a love that could literally kill you. Your mutual desire is to be reunited, but Eleanor is now being held captive by her mother, Sofia Lamb, the new master of Rapture. As an altruist and collectivist, Lamb is the diametric opposite of Andrew Ryan, the wealthy industrialist who founded Rapture as a place where mankind could be unfettered by petty morals, the hand of government, or the word of God. As an antagonist, she lacks Ryan’s charisma and larger-than-life presence, but her personal philosophy and particular brand of madness nonetheless provides an interesting, if heavy-handed, alternative to his.

CRACKDOWN 2 – XBOX 360 Game

Pacific City is under siege. Terrorized nightly by a legion of mutated monsters and daily by the rebellious Cell insurgents, this metropolis needs your help. As a superpowered law enforcement agent, you traverse the city with great leaps and subdue your enemies by any means necessary. Your abilities increase as you explore and complete objectives, bringing you new powers, guns, and vehicles. Sound familiar? If you played its predecessor, then you have a good idea of what’s in store for you in Crackdown 2. This sequel retains the appeal of Crackdown while adding a few twists that help make things feel different. Yet none of these additions are terribly innovative, and there are plenty of issues with which to contend. The scant plot leaves the campaign devoid of momentum, and as you spend most of the game accomplishing the same handful of repetitive objectives, Crackdown 2′s problems become more and more noticeable. Though almost every kind of fun you can have in this game is tainted by flaws, the fun of running amok as a supercop remains remarkably addictive, making Crackdown 2 an entertaining open-world romp.
Pacific City is not exactly a quiet little hamlet.
Comment on this videoWatch this video in High Def
Geographically speaking, this is the same Pacific City that players explored in the first Crackdown. It is still quite large and full of places to go, but time has not been kind to it. Buildings are crumbling, roadways are disrupted, and it generally feels like a more conflict-torn environment. The visuals are improved, and once again the cel-shaded outlines mix well with more realistic textures, creating a distinctive look. Yet Crackdown 2 looks grittier than its predecessor, and while the environments are richer and more complex, the effect isn’t always good. Environmental details don’t stand up well to close inspection, and explosions, of which there are many, don’t look very good at all. Still, it is fun to explore the city and blow stuff up, and the absence of loading times makes doing both easy.

Red Faction Armageddon – XBOX 360 Game

Red Faction Armageddon - XBOX 360

If you’re familiar with the Red Faction series, then you know Mars as a dangerous place where the regimes are oppressive and the building codes are lax. In Red Faction: Armageddon, alien infestation replaces armed uprising as the series takes on a new tone. This third-person shooter may tell an unremarkable tale and lack the freedom of its open-world predecessor, Red Faction: Guerrilla, but Armageddon serves up a fresh new batch of creative mayhem with extensive destructibility and a devastating array of weapons and powers. Blasting your way through hordes of aliens and wreaking merry havoc on the overrun human infrastructure is an entertaining endeavor, but it’s the ingenious and versatile magnet gun that takes the thrills of destruction to new heights. Whether you’re soldiering solo in the single-player campaign or staving off an enemy onslaught with friends online, Red Faction: Armageddon provides a lot of great ways to indulge your destructive desires.
The events of Red Faction: Armageddon take place two generations after those of Red Faction: Guerrilla, so while fans can spot connections between the two games, they are little more than historical references. The most pertinent fact is that you play as Darius Mason, grandson of Guerrilla’s protagonist, Alec Mason, and like his ancestor, Darius is a man of action, not words. After a brief prologue, he gets caught up in a deadly alien outbreak that threatens every human on Mars, and his quest to save the day drives the rest of the campaign. The cutscenes that chronicle the alien outbreak may look nice, but they tell an uninspired story full of action-movie cliches. The profanity-laden dialogue might make you smirk from time to time, but don’t expect to get much out of the boilerplate plot.

Vanquish XBOX 360 Game

Vanquish - XBOX 360

Pure entertainment: that’s Vanquish in a nutshell. This speedy and thrilling third-person cover-based shooter is all madness, overwhelming you with gigantic robots, flurries of gunfire, and explosions so powerful and colorful that you might think you feel the heat. There are a lot of things to love about Vanquish, but its most impressive feat is that while it uses mechanics you’ve seen in other shooters, it feels nothing like them. The focus on speed, the relentless pace, and the fantastic boss fights give Vanquish a feel and style of its own, while its good looks and buttery-smooth frame rate ensure you’re always swept into the action. When you walk away from the campaign, buzzing with the rush of adrenaline, it won’t be the excruciating dialogue or the forced voice acting you remember most, but the joy you felt when zipping around the battlefield, gunning down metallic transforming scorpions and evading the barrage of bullets vomited by a dozen hardy turrets.
In Vanquish, like in so many third-person shooters, you can take cover behind various objects and peek out to take potshots at your enemies. But any comparisons made with games like Gears of War and Army of Two are superficial ones. Vanquish is all about speed and flow, and to that end, it uses two features that turn the predictable rhythms of other shooters upside down. The first is the ability to use the boosters on your fancy armored suit to slide about the battlefield at a high velocity. The other is AR mode, which allows you to slow time down to a crawl. Sliding and slo-mo can be used in tandem to create awesome moments of your own making in which (for example) you leap over cover, boost toward a group of enemies, and activate AR mode, gunning down a raft of robots while bullets whiz past your head. You’re meant to stay on the move rather than to rely on cover to provide unerring protection, and many of the game’s facets contribute to the scurrying pace. Enemies flank you, bots sporting hoverjets loom above you, and jumbo cyborgs fire rockets that turn cover objects into dust. There’s a weapon upgrade system, but enhancements are applied on the battlefield instantly, not in menus. When you get close to death, the game automatically triggers AR mode, giving you more than a fighting chance to stay alive by temporarily slowing things down. All of these facets keep you always in battle, and always on the move.

Wet XBOX 360 Game

Wet – XBOX 360

Wet - XBOX 360
In the first scene of Wet, you slide down a long table in slow motion, smashing through towers of champagne glasses and a giant cake as you gun down thugs who are trying to kill you. Then you leap off the table to fly over a dragon-shaped ice sculpture as you pump bullets into even more goons. After you whip out your sword to finish the last one off, you’ll have killed a dozen enemies in a bloody display of stylish, slow-motion savagery within a few short moments. Wet’s gleefully bloody combat is a combination of high-flying acrobatics and brutal gunplay that is consistently entertaining, despite some rough movement mechanics. And while the seedy plot and cuss-happy characters aren’t anything to write home about, the story is very well paced and propelled by a fiery soundtrack that perfectly suits the over-the-top action. Wet is a high-speed thrill ride that barrels over its own speed bumps and potholes at such a rollicking good pace that you can’t help but have a riotously good time.
The architect of all this destruction is the agile and deadly Rubi Malone. When things go afoul on a job she’s hired to do, she wants payback, and she’s got the skills to get it. Wet introduces you to Rubi’s substantial move set at a measured pace, giving you just enough time to get comfortable with each ability before you unlock a new one. You start out jumping and sliding, but you’ll work your way up to pole swinging, wall jumping, and a host of other acrobatic maneuvers. You’ll use your abilities to traverse a variety of gritty environments as your work your way through the underworld to get at the guys who wronged you. For the most part, navigating is straightforward and fairly easy, though the loose controls ensure that you’ll make your fair share of missteps. If you get stuck, you can hold a button to highlight areas that Rubi can grab onto or run to, which will generally get you on your way. However, some jumps are incongruously tough, and a few sections make your next step frustratingly unclear. You will probably die a bunch of trial-and-error deaths in these parts, and the loading screens along with Rubi’s ugly death grunts get tiresome. But these frustrating bits aren’t frequent, and before too long, you’ll be shooting someone in the face and your mood will undoubtedly improve.

Max Payne 3 – XBOX 360

Max Payne 3 – XBOX 360

Max Payne 3 - XBOX 360
Max Payne’s home has always been on the PC. Now you’ve got games torrents – The original 2001 game and its sequel debuted on the PC, and though they received console versions–some of which captured the excellence of their PC counterparts and some of which didn’t–it was on PC that he first made his mark. Times have changed for Max, and his latest outing hit consoles first and PC second, which may raise concerns about whether, this time around, it’s the PC version that feels secondary and the console versions that feel definitive. As it turns out, such concerns are unfounded. Max Payne 3 is just as gorgeous and intense on PC as it is on consoles, and the pinpoint precision offered by a mouse makes the PC version the best way to enjoy this brutal and haunting shooter.
Wherever you go, there you are. It’s a truth Max Payne knows better than anyone. Fleeing his New York life to take a job working security for a wealthy family in Sao Paulo, the hard-drinkin’, pill-poppin’ Max finds that his demons come along for the ride. Though the details of the plot add up to your typical story of conspiracy and corruption, of the rich and powerful preying on the poor and helpless to become even more rich and powerful, the writing, acting, and presentation elevate this tale well above a boilerplate video game crime story.
It’s hard to stay ambivalent once you see the horrors being suffered by the innocent here, and you’ll likely want to see Max’s quest for vengeance through to its conclusion just as badly as he does. Max reveals a complexity here not seen in earlier games, as he hits rock bottom and must either stay there or face his demons head-on and make himself anew. Other characters, too, reveal a surprising humanity. You might be tempted to write off Marcelo, the youngest brother in the wealthy Branco dynasty Max is hired to protect, as the shallow playboy he often appears to be. But in moments of disarming honesty, he reveals to Max a depth that lies beneath the facade he presents to the world.
