FIFA Street – XBOX 360

Hot on the heels of NBA Street V3, which was released earlier this month, comes FIFA Street–EA Sports Big’s first attempt at applying its successful “Street” formula to the most popular sport in the world. Like its NBA and NFL counterparts, FIFA Street offers a highly stylized, over-the-top version of the sport on which it’s based and sees soccer’s most famous players competing in locations far less glamorous than the stadiums that they’re accustomed to. The game they’re playing, on the other hand, is straight out of a Nike commercial, and it places as much emphasis on humiliating your opponents with flashy moves as it does on scoring goals. The result? FIFA Street is a soccer game that boasts far more style than substance and has more in common with the FIFA games of old than it does with FIFA Soccer 2005.

The first time you play FIFA Street you’ll be encouraged to create a custom player for use in friendly games and in the “rule the street” career mode. The customization options are somewhat limited, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to create a player who bears at least a passing resemblance to you if that’s your goal. Once you’ve settled on your custom player’s physical appearance, you’ll be allocated 2000 “skill bills” (FIFA Street’s currency) to spend on upgrading his attributes, which include speed, shot power, shot accuracy, tricks, and tackling. Your player will be pretty useless at this point, but that will change once you start progressing through the career mode and earning more skill bills.

FIFA Street’s version of soccer is a four-on-four game played on pitches that are, predictably, daubed in graffiti and that really don’t look like anywhere you’d want to be alone after dark. Matches are played either to a time limit (including the traditional halftime swapping of ends) or until one team scores a predetermined number of goals, the default setting being five (most matches last anywhere from two to 10 minutes). Since the pitches are all enclosed and there’s no referee, the only time there’s any kind of pause in the play is when a goal is scored, at which point the unfortunate goalkeeper will get the ball out of his net (assuming that he has one on the pitch in question) and roll the ball out to one of his teammates to get the game under way again. The lack of stoppages makes for an exciting and fast-paced game at times, which is unfortunately a lot more than can be said for the players’ artificial intelligence.

Grand Slam Tennis 2 – XBOX 360

Grand Slam Tennis 2 comes to the sports gaming sphere when fans of the sport already have two other options: Top Spin 4 and Virtua Tennis 4. To stand out from its competition, it’s coming onto the court as the only game with all four Grand Slam venues and a deep roster of legendary players, featuring names that people from all walks of life should recognize. While these two elements are good, a weak career mode and a lack of additional courts cause Grand Slam Tennis 2 to land in the middle of the tennis gaming landscape.

For starters, Grand Slam Tennis 2 is extremely user-friendly thanks in part to two different control options. EA Sports games have never been afraid of letting you use the right analog stick to control things. Here, it’s used for swing mechanics. Flicking the stick in a different direction will result in a different kind of shot. The stick is used for all aspects on the court, including serving, and it works well in all regards. But for those who want simple button presses to dictate shots, that option is also available and can be grasped in no time.

PlayStation 3 owners have the additional benefit of the Move controller, and as you’d expect, it works fairly well. There are some minor delay responses, specifically when you’re required to bring your hand down to initiate a serve, but otherwise, no real problems exist. On top of that, if you have a navigation controller, or want to hold a Sixaxis in the other hand, you can use it to control your player instead of your player being moved automatically.

Forza Motorsport 4 – XBOX 360

Circuit-based racing games are repetitive by nature, but the deja vu you experience when playing Forza Motorsport 4 is especially pervasive–at least if you’re familiar with its superb predecessor. You can’t help noticing that the majority of the cars and tracks in Forza 4 also appeared in Forza 3. They look noticeably better now, which is no mean feat in itself, but early in your new racing career you could still be forgiven for wondering if developer Turn 10′s latest offering might more appropriately have been titled Forza 3.5. Thankfully, that feeling dissipates as new features and improvements reveal themselves, and ultimately there’s no doubt that this is a worthy sequel to one of the best racing games in recent memory.

If you’re one of the many people who played and enjoyed Forza 3, or are still playing and enjoying Forza 3 two years after its release, you’re rewarded for your efforts the first time you start up Forza 4. You don’t get to keep your vast collection of cars or your multimillionaire bank balance, but you’re awarded a good selection of cars and a modest sum of money based on factors such as your Forza 3 driver level, VIP status, and whether or not you owned any of the rare “unicorn” cars. It’s great that after spending countless hours with Forza 3 you don’t have to start from scratch in Forza 4, and you might be pleasantly surprised by some of the cars that you find in your garage once you start playing. Newcomers to Forza have to make do with a first car that wouldn’t warrant a second look if you passed by one in real life, but as one of the Forza faithful you might have access to a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Ferrari 430, an Audi R8, and a Bugatti Veyron as soon as your career gets under way, to name but a few.

Need For Speed The Run – XBOX 360 Game

There’s a whole lot of America between San Francisco and New York City. Need for Speed: The Run’s greatest achievement is the way it sometimes captures the thrill of hitting the open road and experiencing the varied beauty of the American landscape, from the mountains and the prairies to the small towns and skyscrapers. Unfortunately, issues arise that sap some of the momentum from your cross-country trek, but The Run spends enough time doing what it does best to remain an enjoyable journey.

You play as Jack Rourke, a racer who has gotten in way over his head with the mob. His friend Sam promises an end to his problems if he can win a cross-country street race and the huge payout that comes with victory. Sadly, The Run’s attempts to make you care about Jack’s plight fall flat. The talents of actors Sean Faris and Christina Hendricks as Jack and Sam are wasted; their voices emanate from character models with mouths that move oddly and faces that express no emotion. What’s more, the story doesn’t even make sense. Certain rivals whom you pass early in the race show up again when you’re in the home stretch. Thankfully, after an early cutscene that sets up the premise, the game wastes little time with its flimsy storytelling and lets you focus on driving.

Fifa 13 – XBOX 360 Game

From the moment you first set foot in one of FIFA Soccer 13′s beautifully detailed stadiums, it’s clear that EA’s latest football outing isn’t the revelation that its predecessor was. Sure, it’s still feature-packed and entertaining, but where FIFA Soccer 12 revolutionised and updated the classic FIFA formula in some wonderfully inventive ways, FIFA 13 merely maintains it. Its long list of improvements–enhanced physics, AI, player physicality, a better defending system, a tweaked Ultimate Team mode, and a new Skill Games mode–are welcome and well-implemented changes. But on the pitch, it’s hard to tell that you’re playing a dramatically different or better game than FIFA 12.

Indeed, some of FIFA 13′s new marquee features are mere tweaks of those introduced in FIFA 12, one of which is the infamous player impact engine. It has been overhauled in an attempt to reduce those odd, fumbling, and sometimes-hilarious collisions that players made as they bounced over each other on the pitch like rag dolls. But while there’s certainly a noticeable improvement in the physics system, with far less slipups, it’s not infallible; there’s still the odd glitch here and there as players do inhuman backflips over others and flop along the pitch like weird anthropomorphic fish.

Better are the changes to the dribbling system, which have been inspired by the work done on FIFA Street. Now you can swirl the ball around a player’s feet using the analogue stick, teasing defenders with cheeky dummies, stops, and skilful flicks. Pulling off such manoeuvres is so very satisfying, and this system works great with another tweak that means players no longer have to face the direction in which you want them to dribble. This makes play look and feel much more natural, letting you actively shield the ball or ensure that you’re always facing the goal when zipping around defenders for the perfect strike.
